5.1Warm-up(4

①What did you hear?(填空题)

M1: Do you want to play basketball?

M2: Sure. Outside here in the neighborhood or at the park?

M1: At school. The basketball court is better there, and it has lights.

It should beavailable since school's over.

Plus, it's pretty late, so it shouldn't be crowded.

M2: OK, let's go.  Do you have a ball?

M1: Uh-huh.  I also got new basketball shoes!

M2: Those are amazing looking shoes. They look expensive!

M1: Thanks! They cost $150, but they're worth it because they're going to make me a better

basketball player!

M2: How can they do that?

M1: Because they'll make me jump higher.

M2: That doesn't seem possible.

Do they have wings?  Are there springs inside to make you jump higher?

M1: No, but the salesperson said the special material would improve my jump.

M2: I don't believe that.  Sometimes, they tell you anything just so you'll buy their product.

M1: Maybe, but let's play so I could show you how good these shoes will make me.

M2: Ha! I'm still going to beat you anyhow.

5.2Lisitening2

Understand a conversation选择题)

M1: How do you think we'll do in our championship baseball game?

M2: We'll do great!

M1: But don't you think that Jimmy isn't playing very well lately?

M2: I do, but he still has a week to improve.

M1: I think the coach should remove him from the game because he'll make us lose.

M2: That's not the right attitude. Jimmy's a great teammate.

M1: I agree, but he's been slow recently. He's got a positive attitude, and I know he can hit

and catch the ball well, but he can't seem to run fast enough.

M2: That's true, but instead of kicking him off the team, we should consider how we can help

our teammate.

M1: Do you think there's something we can do?

M2: Sure. First we should figure out why he's slow.

Maybe he hurt his leg or maybe he's feeling sick.

Or he may just not realize that he's slowed down.

M1: Actually, I heard him say that he's been so busy with school and work.

I think he's probably just extremely tired.

He has no energy to run.

M2: You're right. I noticed that. Should we first talk to the coach?

M1: We could or maybe we could ask other teammates to ask Jimmy what's wrong so he

doesn't get mad at us.

Or we could leave a note on his car.

M2: I think the best approach is to be direct with Jimmy.

M1: I just don't want Jimmy to be upset at us if we speak directly to him.

M2: He won't be, and he'll appreciate our help.

M1: That's true. I should think more about Jimmy than winning a championship game.

Questions:

1.What do we know about Jimmy?

2. Why does the first man suggest removing Jimmy from the team?

3. What is most likely to be the reason why Jimmy can't run fast enough?

4. What will the two men probably do next?

②Understand a passage(选择题)

Learning can be difficult.

University students have so much information that they must learn, but they often have

trouble remembering it.

Scientists know that sleep is necessary for remembering because when we sleep, our brain

saves information in our memory.

This is why it's necessary for students to get enough sleep every night.

Researchers have recently found that exercising may also help our memory.

In an experiment, they taught some mice and rats new skills.

Then some of the mice and rats were put in a wheel so they could run, and the other mice

and rats did nothing.

The researchers say that the exercising mice and rats learnt and remembered their new

skills better.

Researchers also did a similar experiment with people.

After they learnt something, half of the people began exercising right away.

The other people didn't exercise until four hours later.

The results of this experiment were interesting.

The people who waited to exercise learnt better than the people who exercised immediately

afterwards.

The researchers are not sure why memory is better if people exercise later.

They recommend that there must be more research before they clearly understand how

exercising affects memory.

They hope that future research can tell us how much we should exercise and when we

should exercise to help us learn better.

The researchers believe that it's a good idea for students to exercise after they study

because the brain releases special chemicals that help them learn.

Questions:

1. What did the researchers recently find out about mice and rats in an experiment?

2. What happened in a similar experiment with people?

3. Based on the results of the experiment with people, whose memory is better?

4. What do the researchers hope future research will discover?

5.4Specking—listening and specking6

Conversation-Task 1~2(填空题/判断题

W: Charles! Can you come help me with my computer?

M: Why do you want me to help, Becky?

W: Because you're the computer expert!

M: No, I'm not, but what's the problem?  Computer shut off?  Did you break it?

W: No. I can't search on the Internet.  Nothing happens when I try.

M: Let me check.  Hmm. It doesn't seem to be working right now.

W: This is a nightmare!  Can't you call the Internet service?

M: No, the Internet service isn't working, but it'll work again soon I'm sure.

W: But I can't do anything!

M: What do you need to do?  Do you have an important email to send?

W: I wanted to post some pictures of my new dog on my Facebook page to show my friends.

M: That isn't important to do right now.

W: Also, I was shopping for some new shoes online and playing an online game.

What am I going to do now?

M: Don't be so emotional, sister.  You can go to the shopping centre and find some shoes.

W: I suppose so.  But what about the game I was playing?

M: It's just a game.  Instead of playing a game online, why don't you spend time with your

friends?

W: Brilliant idea!  Maybe I could go with my friends to the shopping centre and buy

shoes.

M: That's a good plan.  Oh wait, I think the Internet is working again.

W: Never mind.  Now I think I'd rather see my friends and get out of the flat.

M: Great choice! It's much better to spend time in the real world than in front of the computer!

Passage-Task 1/2(填空题/判断题

In 2006, Jason McElwain played in a basketball game that inspired and amazed Americans

and many people around the world.

Jason was born in 1987, and he was found to have autism at the age of two.

Autism is a condition that makes it difficult for him to communicate and have social

relationships with others.

However, Jason loved basketball, so he became manager of his high school basketball team.He never played in a game, but the team and the rest of the students loved him.

For the final basketball game of Jason's last year in high school, the coach decided to put

Jason's name on the list of players so Jason could be rewarded for his hard work taking care of the team.

It also meant that Jason could wear the official team uniform and sit with the team during the

game.

If the team was winning, the coach would let Jason play.

Fortunately, the team was winning, so the coach put him in the last four minutes of the gameThe first time Jason tried to score, the ball didn't go anywhere near the basket.

He got the ball again but failed to score again.

The coach started to doubt his decision.

Then on the next shot Jason took, he scored three points, which is difficult to do because theplayer must be so far away from the basket to earn three points instead of two.

Then he did it again, over and over.

Amazingly, Jason scored 20 points in just four minutes, and the audience went crazy

watching him.

Many people had tears in their eyes because they knew they had just watched something

very special.

5.5Homework

News report 1(选择

Who's faster, a horse or a human?

Of course, we know horses are faster, but there's one race where humans sometimes win.

In the UK, there has been a race between horses and runners every year since 1980.

This race is about 22 miles long, and the runners compete with the horses with riders on their backs.

Both the horses and runners go up and down hills which have a lot of rocks, and both also go across a river.

Because the horses have the extra weight of their riders, crossing the river is more difficult

for the horses than it is for the runners.

The horses and runners have the same conditions except that the horses with their riders

must stop every 15 minutes during the race to make sure the horses aren't getting too hot,

but people who are running don't overheat easily like horses, so they don't have to stop.

The horses also run two extra miles.

It's not surprising that horses win most of the time, but it is surprising that two runners were

able to beat the horses in past races.

Questions:

1.What kind of race in the UK is discussed in the news report?

2. What is an extra challenge for the horses in the race?

3. What is surprising?

When something makes people unhappy, they express their anger on the Internet.

One Chinese museum recently experienced the power of the Internet.

A museum in Xi'an has some cats that have been living there for many years.

The museum workers and visitors take care of the popular cats, and tourists often take

pictures of them.

One day a child tried to play with baby cats, and the mother cat hurt the child.

The child's mother complained to the museum, so the museum decided to catch the cats and give them to people.

When people found out, they began to say negative things on the museum's Weibo page.

They said the cats did nothing wrong and were calm unless someone bothered them.

They also worried they'd have no home.

After receiving so many bad comments, the museum officials changed their minds, and now

the cats are staying.

The museum appreciated that people loved their cats so much.

Questions:

1.What do we know about the museum in Xi'an?

2. What happened one day at the museum?

3. What was the museum's final decision?

Understanding passages(选择

Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay is home to a famous prison.

Alcatraz prison was opened in 1934 to hold the worst types of criminals, mostly bank robbers and killers.

Many of America's famous criminals stayed there.

It was considered a strong prison because it was on a large island of rocks away from the

mainland.

All around the island, the water in San Francisco Bay is cold and rough.

Because of these harsh conditions, officials claim that no prisoners ever successfully

escaped Alcatraz prison.

During the 29 years that Alcatraz prison was open, 36 men tried to escape, but 23 of them

were caught, six were killed, five were missing, and two drowned.

Officials believe that the five missing men probably sank in the water and died, but their

bodies were never found.

In 1963, Alcatraz prison was officially closed because it was too expensive to manage.

Also, the salt from the surrounding sea greatly damaged the buildings.

However, it wasn't closed forever.

In 1972 it became a tourist attraction.

Many tourists take a ferryboat from San Francisco to visit the island and see this famous

prison.

They can take a tour and see where the prisoners stayed or visit the lighthouse, which is the

oldest lighthouse on the West Coast of the US.

Alcatraz is also a popular place for Hollywood.

Many American movies and television shows were filmed at the prison, and it continues to be a popular part of American history.

Questions:

1.What do we know about Alcatraz prison?

2. What happened to the prisoners who tried to escape?

3. What happened to Alcatraz prison in 1963, 29 years after it was open?

4. What can people do on Alcatraz Island today?
